The YHR-871D is a new professional model double horn made by Yamaha in Japan. It was introduced in 2016 and replaces the 667V model. The 871 has a very lightweight bell flare, reminiscent of the 667V. Note that some of the photos show the fixed bell version of this horn. We stock the 871D with the screw bell flare.
The 871 uses a traditional Geyer-style wrap with a medium size bell and thicker rim wire. The tone is rich and deep with a solid core. A new gold brass leadpipe design contributes to consistent tone and playing feel throughout the instrument’s range. This model features a .476" bore size that maximizes its performance potential. A hollow fourth rotor makes notable contributions to response and tone. The fourth valve trigger and pinky hook can be adjusted to the player's comfort. The Bb second valve slide features a long pull ring for added convenience to the player, and the second valve slide tubes are gold brass. Engraved brass valve caps enhance response, providing cleaner articulation and a well defined core.
Yamaha Press Release
ANAHEIM (January 21, 2016) — Yamaha today introduced the YHR-871 line of Custom level Geyer-style French horns that evoke the revered YHR-861.
Offering a redefined sound with a wider range of tonal characteristics for performing passages that require added nuance, the new instruments provide the well-regarded consistency and playability associated with Yamaha Custom-level horns.
The original Geyer-style YHR-861 model horns remain popular with professional players in orchestras around the world, and the new models include superior design elements from the YHR-861 that help shape a rich, centered tone. Meticulous craftsmanship offers the value and quality that are integral characteristics of Yamaha horns. To help achieve a true, classic Geyer horn sound, a thicker rim wire delivers a rich, centered sound and the gold brass leadpipe and round main tuning slides provide consistent feel and sound characteristics.
"The Yamaha design team wanted to make a great French horn even greater, and they succeeded by working with input from world-class players," said Brian Petterson, marketing manager, wind instruments, Yamaha Corporation of America. "A more traditional style Geyer wrap was designed to create a horn that features a gorgeous tone with excellent pitch, expressiveness and precision."
