"Them 'bones, them fabulous Capitol 'Bones! Trombonist Matt Niess leads his five-trombone team and rhythm section in a memorable recording debut through an assorted 13-tune set that swings and sways through superbly arranged versions of classics such as Parker's "Anthropology," Strayhorn's "Lush Life," Coltrane's "Impressions," Garner's "Misty," and more standards and group originals. Whether playing bop, ballads, funk, or Latin jazz, this sensational D.C.-area band generates ensemble and solo work that brings the oft-ignored trombone to glorious prominence."
-- Nancy Ann Lee (JazzTimes)
"Trombonist Niess and his fellow trombonists have something of an unusual act -- the entire brass section of the band consists of trombones, usually arranged as four tenors and one bass 'bone. The result is an often mellow big-band sound with far fewer glissandos than might be expected, with some interesting moments tucked into the charts and the solos. Niess is an expert player who provides a convincing argument for the 'bone as something other than the subject of humor. The album itself is a mixture of standards and originals, all nicely handled."
-- Steven McDonald (AllMusic)
