The 1601 Signature trumpet is an original design from Zig Kanstul. One of his first bell designs was the #7, which is used on several Kanstul trumpet including the model 1500 Bb. The 1601 is a different take on a lead trumpet sound, and improves on the response of the 1500 through a lightweight copper bell and round tuning slide. The outside slides made from brass create an interesting two-tone brass-copper look and the material helps keep the sound warm and not too shrill. We like this 1601 because it projects well, but with a broader sound that you might hear on a more traditional lead trumpet like the Kanstul 1600. A strong player who blows a fairly big air stream will love this trumpet. Mariachi players take note as well. Those with a lighter touch who want a narrower center may prefer the Kanstul 1600 for a lead horn, but the 1601 is distinctive and inspiring on its own.
If you play a 1601, you likely can't go wrong with a matching Kanstul 1525 flugelhorn in copper. Your resistance may be futile.
