Steven Gross, horn, with the Capella Metropolitana of Slovakia conducted by Dale Clevenger
Includes works by Bach, Quantz, Heinichen, Rollig
American premiere recording of several Baroque horn Concerti. Two are found in the recently discovered Lundt manuscript in Sweden. Remaining works are of similar interest. The Neruda Concerto, usually performed by trumpet, is played by the instrument originally specified, the horn. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto no. 2 is rendered with horn instead of trumpet.
The American Record Guide says of his playing: …an excellent tone and the ability and temperatment to play heroically.
“...outstanding, striking the right balance between thoughtfulness and verve, planning and spontaneity – an excellent tone and the ability and temperament to play heroically.”
