Shires FAQ

Q: Why should I buy a Shires trombone?

A: If you want the finest workmanship, and most options in a horn that responds quickly and easily, but can be made to play exactly as you'd like it, this is for you. Shires are made in the style of the classic Conns, but have many options that give you the modern, dark sound needed for today's players. If you like another brand, buy it, but if you want a better artful horn handmade for you, this may be your best choice.

Q: With so many options, how do I choose one?

A: Tell us what you play now, what horns are your favorites, and we'll point you in the right direction. We allow a trial period and any parts swaps you may need so that the horn fits your style perfectly.

Q: How long does it take to get a Shires horn?

A: If we have it in stock, we can ship immediately with your credit card payment. If we have to order it, allow 1-2 weeks minimum, and sometimes as much as 6-10 weeks for some models. We try to stock several tenors and basses at any time.

Q: Do you sell parts for Shires horns?

A: Yes, all parts are available to add to your existing horn. However, the slide and bell coupling is unique. We can special order slides with any coupling. For unusual leadpipe sizes, it can be faster to order from Shires directly. Ask us first though, as we may have one in stock.

Q: What models do you keep in stock?

A: We try to keep the following parts here all the time. Often we have much less due to demand.

Slides: T47, TW47G, TB47, TB47YC, TB47/62, B62, B62/78, B62G

Bells: Tenor 1Y, 2Y, 1G, 1GT7, 1YM, 2YM, 2RVET7, Bass 1Y, 1G, 1GT7, 2RLWT7, 1YHW

Crooks: B, C, yellow and gold

Valves: All combinations of Thayer and Shires, straight neckpipes, and counterweights

Q: Does it cost more to get a Shires from a dealer than it does to buy direct from the company?

A: No, it costs either the same or less to get a horn through us. And, you'll most likely get it faster from us than by going direct. This is because we may have more horns here in stock than Shires does, and our prepaying for them gives us top priority for filling orders. However, if you are visiting the Boston area, you may be able to try some horns at the Shires shop. Mention our name if we've helped you, and they might send a commission. Thanks,
