Large Bore Symphonic Tenor Trombones

S.E. Shires Artist Custom

The Shires Custom Artist series is a beautiful modular horn from Boston with many options, used by top players around the world.

$3100-4400
S.E. Shires Pro Select

The new Shires Pro Select line features 4 new large bore tenor trombones in the most popular configurations of the modular Artist Custom horns, above.  All of these new models are made to the same high quality specifications in the Shires shop.  All include one #2 medium sized leadpipe and a Shires hard case.  Mouthpiece is sold separately.  No component substitutions are available, but extra Shires leadpipes are available separately at $110-250 depending on metal choice.  Slides are similar widths to Conn (medium) or Bach (wide), and feature nickel crooks and oversleeves for efficiency and durability.  The wide slide allows proper neck clearance around the large axial valve.  Bells are 2-piece, 8.5" diameter, and are beautifully engraved.  There is nothing cheaper about these instruments compared to the Artist Custom line.  The lower price comes from efficiency of production.  If you're concerned about absolute specs, ("Is that a 2RVE bell, or a 2RVET7?" or "Is that a TW47 slide or TB47?"), you're better off ordering a custom horn from the Artist Custom line.  If you say, "I just need a great horn with an axial valve, in gold brass", then one of these may fit the bill nicely.
  • PSRR47 - .547" medium width slide, rotary valve, rose brass bell with unsoldered rim
  • PSRY47 - .547" medium width slide, rotary valve, yellow brass bell, unsoldered rim
  • PSAY47W - .547" wide slide, axial valve, yellow brass bell with soldered rim
  • PSAG47W - .547" wide slide, axial valve, gold brass bell with soldered rim
$2995-3295

Kanstul 970

This is the Kanstul basic professional large bore trombone, using most of the pasrts of the 1570, but it's several hundred dollars less.  The cost savings comes from the following:  standard rotor instead of the CR, more brass parts on the tuning slide instead of nickel trim, and only one leadpipes, which is fixed.  .547" lightweight slide in brass or bronze.  8.5" one-piece hand-hammered and hand-spun bell in brass or bronze, open wrap F- attachment with pull to E, includes Protec case.  We order ours with the new 1600-style trigger paddle and linkage for better ergonomics.  Often in stock in all bronze. $1650
Willson 411TA

Based on the classic Bach design, this beautiful Swiss-made instrument offers some new twists.  It has the standard large bore dimensions, including .547" lightweight nickel slide and 8.5" brass bell.  But, instead of chrome plated inner slide tubes, these are finished with a gold hued titanium nitride (TiN) coating.  This coating is harder than chrome, won't chip off, and looks beautiful.  I believe these coated tunes cannot be soldered, so the inner tubes are attached with small hex bolts, allowing easy replacement or adjustment.  Also, the main inner slide brace is adjustable with a hex wrench, if a realignment is ever needed.  The rotary valve is the Swiss-made Rotax valve, which features a 100% geometrical passage volume. In comparison, the conventional rotary valves only provides 50%-70% passage flow. This allows smooth and unrestricted air flow.  The goal was to make the instrument more controllable and consistent throughout all registers.  The Rotax system is patented by WILLSON.  Features open wrap F-attachment, adjustable paddle.  Includes wood case.  Mouthpiece is sold separately.  We have only five instruments at this price.  The regular price is $3500. $2200
