 |
This new piston euphonium from Miraphone is one of the hot ones to try.
We have two on order in silver plate with gold trim. One will
have a tuning trigger, one is without. The pitch is stellar
enough on this horn that we think most players won't need the
trigger. This instrument is endorsed by Demondrea Thurman, the
fabulous euphonium player of Sotta Voce, and brass professor at
Uinversity of Alabama, Tuscaloosa. /610-.638" bore, 12.2"
bell, compensating system, ergonomic grip, easy reach to the fourth
valve. Includes Miraphone gig bag. Due late Spring 2008. |

Miraphone model 56A "Kaiser" |
Here is a neat
instrument from the folks at Miraphone. The model 56A features an
upright bell, 4 rotary valves, and a 12.2" bell flare. The bore of the
valve tubing is .579"/.638". It is stock in yellow brass. This is a non
compensating model. It has a great sound and is a lot of fun to play.
This model works well for tuba players as the ergonomic layout of the
instrument is similar to a tuba or for orchestral players looking for a
tenor tuba. The stock 56A takes a small shank trombone mouthpiece, an
optional large shank receiver is available at no extra charge. Custom
miraphone hardcase is also available at an extra charge.
As shown below, we
ordered this one special for a local client. It has an optional 5th
valve and is in gold brass with a bell garland.

H980 |
A clone of the Yamaha 321, and similar Besson and Willson
instruments, this euphonium has a large shank bass trombone style
mouthpiece receiver, 4 top piston valves, and is non-compensating. It
has one of the best in tune scales of any euphonium I've played, and
sounds beautiful. Lighter than some of the European euphoniums, it is
easy to play and has a warm present sound. You can buy them with a
hard case, or without. I stock them only in silver, lacquer by
special order. I prefer the silver, both in finish quality and
playing quality. This horn received newly improved valve guides in
2002. This horn is a bargain compared to the Yamaha 321, and works
even better for me with the large shank receiver. I've used this horn
personally on many occasions with great success. With a Weril hard case. Usually in stock.

YEP-321

This horn is the standard for a reasonably priced very fine
playing euphonium. Small shank mouthpiece receiver, 4 top pistons,
non-compensating, a fine copy of the Besson/Willson design. It's a worthy horn for
far less than the cost of many European models. It has a better
in-tune scale than the least expensive 3+1 non-compensating Besson
instrument. However, I think the Weril 980 is close to the quality of
this Yamaha for less money, so it gives the Yamaha a run for its
money. We occasionally have a used one for sale. This instrument is very popular
in Los Angeles, where commercial doubling is the name of the game, and
compensating euphonium snobbery is not.

YEP-642 |
A great professional euphonium from the folks at Yamaha. This
euphonium has a 11.8" two piece yellow brass bell and has a .591"-.661"
graduated bore size. It has 3 piston valves on top and one on the side
(3+1). It is a compensating model, meaning that the 4th valve, when
engaged, is redirected through the valve set and a second set of tubing
to create the correct length for lower notes to be more in tune than
they would be one a standard euphonium. The model 642 euphonium is one
of the very best compensating horns out there. This is a terrific
instrument for wind band, brass ensemble, orchestra, concert band or
anytime a euphonium is needed. The response and pitch is excellent
throughout the registers. Includes a yamaha hard case.

YEP-842S |
The top of the line, Yamaha's custom model euphonium, and
it's all about the details. It varies in design from the YEP-642,
adapting new features with the proven design of the 642. The 842S
features a completely new leadpipe design for immediate and comfortable
response. The 53H mouthpiece included was designed specifically for a
perfect balance with the YEP-842S. The first branch features a newly
designed bow guard which not only protects the instrument, but adds
definition and clarity to the sound. The shape and positioning of the
hand rest facilitates both comfort and technique, while Yamaha’s unique
moisture trap captures any condensation or oil which leaves the bottom
valve cap. The bottom bow has a longer, wider bow guard for a broader
dynamic range and improved tonal projection. In silverplated finish with
24K gold trim. This euphonium is a soloists dream.

This new professional euphonium is made in Germany at Schreiber, who
used to make all the parts for the Besson euphoniums, which were
shipped to the UK for assembly. With Besson's bankruptcy, Schreiber
decided to update the tooling and make a superior euphonium by
themselves. Yes, the name comes from the old grand Rapids,
Michigan company JW York, which split off from Buffet. This
Schreiber line of instrument is also a split off from Buffet, and
Yorkshire is the center of Brass band activity, so it seemed
fitting. 3+1 compensating, all silver plate, with hard case.
This is one of the hot euphoniums out now, and is considered one of
the best. This is the band model. Also available is a
solo model, which has a main slide trigger and larger bell.
For most players, this is the favorite. The part number 67
comes from the fact that the Besson Sovereign 967 euphonium was also
made with this tooling until recently. Beautiful sound, great
pitch, flawless workmanship, we recommend. Fits large shank
receiver. |

NEW Walter Nirschl 700S
 |
Herr Nirschl is known for building outstanding custom tubas in his
German shop. Now he's licensed some of his designs to a
manufacturer in India, formerly the maker of the Besson student
line, including this new 3+1 non-compensating
euphonium. I tested a sample here at the shop a while ago and
was hooked.
This instrument has flawless design and workmanship, and the ease of
playing as well as pitch is excellent. In silver plate, with
large shank receiver, includes MTS hard case. This 3+1 style
may be the ticket for players who learned on a 3 valve instrument,
and have better coordination to activate the 4th valve with the left
hand as this horn does. If you like a 3+1 instrument, I think
this horn is nicer than the Weril H980S for the price, and gives the
Yamaha 321 a run for its money. At this price, it doesn't
quite have the trim and attention to detail as the German instruments
do, but it's very well done. And for most players, the advantage
of the compensating valve system is little if anything. Non-comp
will get you a lighter horn for less money with few drawbacks.
Dyed in the wool euph soloists will prefer a more boutique horn than
this, but band players, doublers, and students should find this to be
an excellent instrument that won't break the bank. |
