Bass Trombones

S.E Shires Artist Custom

The Shires Artist Custom series is a modular horn from Boston with many options, used by top players around the world.  Three unique valve choices are available. $5080-5440
S.E. Shires Pro Select

This new Shires Pro Select bass trombone has inline rotary valves and a gold brass bell, and is an incredible playing horn.  It's warm, it's snappy, it's efficient, it's beautiful.  And it's a thousand dollars less.  This horn has no options like the Shires Custom Artist model, above, but is the same high quality instrument at a lower price due to more efficient production.  It comes with a single Shires #2 leadpipe and a hard case.  Extra leadpipes and mouthpiece are sold separately.  There is nothing cheaper about these instruments compared to the Artist Custom line.  The lower price comes from efficiency of production.  If you're concerned about absolute specs, ("Is that a 2RVE bell, or a 2RVET7?" or "Is that a B62 slide or B62YC?"), you're better off ordering a custom horn from the Artist Custom line.  If you say, "I just need a great bass trombone with inline rotary valves and a red bell", then one of these may fit the bill nicely. $3995
Kanstul 1670 George Roberts

The prince of the commercial bass trombone from Stan Kenton to Jaws and beyond, Mr. Roberts always advocates the single valve bass trombone.  He uses this new Kanstul model, custom built in Anaheim, California featuring a conical bell section, slide tuning, several leadpipes, and an open wrap F attachment with the Kanstul CR valve.  Now includes fast E-pull slide stop.  I play this too.  All the time.  It's a wonderful lightweight trombone, and a work of art. $3350
Kanstul 1662

This is an updated version of the classic bass trombones from the '20's to the '60's that featured slide tuning.  This lightweight custom horn has new oversize CR valves and several bell and slide choices.  If you liked the old '60's Conn bass trombones but were annoyed by their quirks, you'll love this one. $3900
Kanstul 1662I

Inline valve version of the 1662 gives greater technical agility and a slightly more compact tone. $3900
Kanstul 1585CR

Modeled after the classic 50B, this horn features a large taper lightweight brass bell, wide slide, inline CR valves, bell tuning, and removable leadpipes. $3535
Kanstul 1585T

This rarely seen option on the 1585 feature genuine Ed Thayer valves, new ore comfortable trigger paddles and grip, and several bell choices.  It's an open, easy playing feel with a quick response. $4335
Willson 511TA

Based on the classic Bach design, this beautiful Swiss-made instrument offers some new twists.  It has the standard bass trombone dimensions, including .562" lightweight nickel slide and 10" brass bell.  But, instead of chrome plated inner slide tubes, these are finished with a gold hued titanium nitride (TiN) coating.  This coating is harder than chrome, won't chip off, and looks beautiful.  I believe these coated tunes cannot be soldered, so the inner tubes are attached with small hex bolts, allowing easy replacement or adjustment.  Also, the main inner slide brace is adjustable with a hex wrench, if a realignment is ever needed.  The rotary valves are the Swiss-made Rotax valve, which features a 100% geometrical passage volume. In comparison, the conventional rotary valves only provides 50%-70% passage flow. This allows smooth and unrestricted air flow.  The goal was to make the instrument more controllable and consistent throughout all registers.  The Rotax system is patented by WILLSON.  Features open wrap F-attachment, adjustable paddle.  Includes wood case, or no case, or upgrade to another case for a great price.  Mouthpiece is sold separately.  We have only five instruments at this price.  The regular price is $4600.  For those who like the Bach 50B3O but want something nicer and rare, this is the ticket. $3200
Conn 88HK

Very large tenor or small bass, you call it.  New 9" large throat K bell on the 88H platform makes a nimble single valve bass with several choices of slides. $2244
Conn 62H

New Ohio design forgoes bell tuning for lighter slide action.  All gold brass, stacked valves, open wrap, removable leadpipes, a very nimble player.  Gone are the quirks of the old '60's Conn's, like the overly heavy slide with tuning mechanism, odd double thumb paddles, Bb/F/E tuning, and closed wrap tubing.  However, the result of this new model is one with an odd balance and ergonomics.  That being said, it's a beautiful playing horn, and is much better than anything else on the market at this price.  $3029
Conn 62HI

Inline valve version with improved ergonomics and balance, and no overly resistant feel, even with the inline valves. $3029
Yamaha YBL-822G

This is the newest incarnation of the Yamaha Doug Yeo model trombone.  Mr. Yeo, bass trombonist of the Boston Symphony, has worked with Yamaha for years to perfect a symphonic bass that he will endorse.  You have to hand it to Yamaha.  This is an almost perfect trombone.  It has a medium weight with an immediate response, but a broad sound, with a beautiful tone.  It's comfortable to hold, looks beautiful, and...the second valve is easily removable.  Personally, I like the light weight and response of a single valve bass, but many players steer clear of them due to the additional technique required.  With this instrument, you get both, and it takes seconds to make the conversion.  Use the single setup for your orchestral jobs, then add the second valve for your commercial band jobs or recitals.  It's really perfectly done.  The D wrap has been improved, the bracing, slide crook, and valve caps have been changed to improve tone and efficiency, and it's a great package right out of the box without any need for a tune-up or alteration.  BTW, have you seen those valve caps before?  Yes you have.  They're copied from the Kanstul trombone. Even the Yamaha case is perfect.  It's the smallest, most compact bass trombone case ever, and will allow easy travel without need for a road case.  Smart cats, they. $3479
Yamaha YBL-830 New Xeno model has inline valves in Bb/F/Gb/D, and 9.5" yellow brass bell.  Lacquered, with very sleek hard case. $3149
